2026 Pumpkin Growing Contest
Join the Protropy Foundation, the Nederland Farmer’s Market, and Nederland Victory Gardens for a celebration of high-altitude agriculture!
Official Rules & Guidelines
This contest celebrates the grit it takes to grow at altitude. A 40-pound pumpkin grown at 8,500 feet—enduring hail, elk, and 45°F nights in July—deserves just as much respect as a sea-level giant. These rules are built for mountain growers: competitive, fair, and weather-tested.

Eligibility
- Geographic Requirement: Entries must be grown at a minimum elevation of 6,500 feet within the Peak-to-Peak region (Nederland, Ward, Jamestown, Gold Hill, Rollinsville, Black Hawk, Central City, and Coal Creek Canyon).
- Grower Status: Must be grown, tended, and harvested by the entrant(s).
- One Entry Per Plot: We allow one entry per garden plot or household per category. Enter as an individual or a team (community garden group or family project).
- Grown Outdoors: Entries must be grown in-ground or in raised beds. Greenhouse-grown entries are not eligible to ensure a fair playing field against the elements.
Prize Categories
Adult Division
- Heaviest Pumpkin: Determined by official weigh-in. Must be "sound" (no holes through to the interior).
- High Altitude Oddities: For heirloom pumpkins, specialty winter squash, and decorative gourds. Judged on character, color, and successful mountain cultivation.
- The Survivalist (Ugly Pumpkin) Award: Celebrating the ones the mountains tried to take. Soundness rules do not apply; vole nibbles, deer scars, and frost damage are welcome.
- The Mountain Miracle Award: The contest’s highest honor for the most impressive achievement given specific growing conditions.
Youth Division
- Heaviest Pumpkin (Under 18): Open to any variety of pumpkin or squash grown by our younger mountain growers.
Entry and Logistics
- Registration: All entries must be brought to the Peak Harvest Foundation booth by 12:00 PM on October 4th.
- Form: Each entry must fill out a brief registration slip at the booth upon arrival.
- Preparation: Transport is the grower’s responsibility. Please ensure vines are trimmed to within 4 inches of the stalk before arrival.
- Liability: While we will treat all entries with care, the Peak Harvest Foundation is not responsible for damage to your pumpkins.
Judging & Decisions
- Exclusivity: A single pumpkin may only win one prize category (e.g., the Heaviest Pumpkin winner is not eligible for the Mountain Miracle or Oddities awards).
- Finality: Judges’ decisions are final. Winners announced on stage (Time TBD).
